Comedy Central recently announced their new branding redesign. I really like the typography they use, and I understand the need for the company to update their logo. What they came up with is close, but isn’t really my cup of tea.
The font choice is cool. The flipping of the Central seems unnecessary, if only to explain the use of a backwards concentric C.
The brand insignia itself… It makes sense conceptually, I get the “centrality” of it, but isn’t very original and doesn’t convey any sense of Comedy or fun. I understand that the company is a product of Viacom, but they still have a mission of COMEDY. Visually one just sees a © mark. Not much originality.
I’ve come up with my own rendition, taking into account the applications and uses for a corporate brand and still staying within the typographic design story already created. I think its ambiguity and underlying humor capture the brand a little more closely. My two cents…
UPDATE: After months of viewing the new campaign, I like what they did. It works, especially in motion graphics.
